From a biological point of view, Mexico is one of the seven most diverse countries; this makes Mexico a mega diverse country. Sinaloa is situated in the Northwestern part of Mexico. It borders with Sonora and Chihuahua in the North, Durango in the East and with Nayarit in the South. We are based in Mazatlan, a large city with approximately 400.000 inhabitants and one of Mexico’s major resorts on the Pacific. Mazatlan is located about 10 km south of the Tropic of Cancer; its climate is tropical maritime. The rainy season extends from june to september/october with an average annual temperature of 28°C.
Due to the presence of the Sierra Madre Occidental in the eastern part of the state it is possible to distinguish roughly between three ecological zones, corresponding to as many altitude ranges: departing from the sea we encounter the lowlands, the foothills and finally the mountains of the Sierra Madre itself.. The physical environment of Sinaloa includes a broad variety of habitats such as pine forest, pine oak forest, deciduous forest, mangroves, coastal flats, lakes, ponds and reservoirs. This geographic and ecological diversity make Sinaloa a very interesting region for birding and wildlife photography. Another factor of importance is its location in the transition zone between the nearctic (North America) and the neotropical (Central and South America) regions; this is the reason for the exclusive mix of ornithofauna from both regions that can be found here. Mexico is known for its biodiversity, for its many bird species, approximately 1,076 and especially for its large amount (104) of endemic species. Of these endemic species, the majority is living in Northwest Mexico. For instance, in the state of Sinaloa there are 42 endemic birds, that makes it a real challenge for amateur and professional birdwatchers. Sinaloa and surrounding states still have many authentic places and pure nature to offer for travelers. To inform you better, we will now give you a short description of the three ecological zones, their natural treasures, and some of the natural protected areas LA GUASIMA and LA MESETA DE CACAXTLA which are some of the regions that we are working within and that we invite you to discover their secrets along with us.
